Do you guys like fusion?

If so, Vital Tech Tones are amazing.

Steve Smith is my favorite jazz drummer.

He is also one of the driving forces who keeps Fusion alive and lively.

I adore his exellent Trio recordings with Frank Gambale and Stu Hamm; The Light Beyond is still among my most rotated CDs.
The Strangers Hand featuring Jerry Goodman (violin), Oteil Burbridge (bass) and Howard Levy (keyboards, harmonica) is my second favorite.

Edit: Speaking about Fusion, what do you guys think in general?
For me it is one of the fastest burn-outs ever in Music History. It took only 5-6 years to play this genre to death. All potential was either sacrificed to nonsensically virtuoso exhibitionism or turned into Muzak.
There were thousands of recordings but only a handful stood the test of time. The two pioneer works by Miles Davis, everything by the MkI incarnation of the Mahavishnu Orchestra, The first Return to Forever/ Chick Corea, the 2nd Weather Report and John Abercrombie's Timeless ... that's basically it.
Everything else is for the bin, except -just for me- all by Return to Forever, who stand out because of their close relationship to the Prog-Rock of those days.

Maha and Weather Report are usually who I turn to for fusion as well.

Hrm, is Niacin (Sheehan + Chambers + someone or other) included on the list of nonsensical virtuoso exhibitionists? I think their cover of Red is pretty tasteful.

I'll be listening to Wes Montgomery this week. tell ya what i think of it when I'm through.

:shock: I swear I mentioned Weather Report. And of course this list refers only to the first wave. Nowadays there is lots of intelligent Fusion.

Personaly I love Atlantis album. The title track is pure free jazz destruction

I have Friendly Galaxy, A Quiet Place In The Universe and Space Is The Place. All great.

I've heard the latter. And also one more album which name just disappeard from my memory. His discography is really huge, so one needs time to listen to all of this stuff ;)
