I guess somewhere in between when ripping off Slayer riffs got boring and when guitar harmonies, odd time signatures, post-rock influences, and clean vocals became overdone and redundant, there were some really good bands around.

Right now I know of the mainstream bands - The Dillinger Escape Plan, Converge, Isis... but I'm looking for more of the good underground type bands like Prayer for Cleansing (www.myspace.com/prayerforcleansing) or Zao (http://www.myspace.com/zao). Anyone know any other bands or at least interested in this type of music?

You should understand first that those are not metalcore bands.

Well on that list the only band that is 100% metalcore is Zao.
The others well have metalcore elements but i don't think they can be considered just "metalcore" i mean Converge is like a mix of screamo-hardcore-grindcore, DeP is a mix of grind/hardcore with experimental elements..

Btw Noodles, did you try All Shall Perish last album?.. It's more deathcore than metalcore but still good.

They're clearly hardcore; more on the noisy screamo side like Bloodlet and Integrity. I would never consider them metalcore unless they've change on recent albums.

...I can never determine the difference between hardcore and metalcore when I hear the two genres--and sometimes deathcore. Care to explain why Zao is hardcore and not metalcore? I'm not saying you're wrong, just trying to expand my knowledge of the genres...
