MetalReviews vs The Dillinger Escape Plan: we love the new album, but does the band? (answer - of course!)
Firstly, congratulations on a great, great album. Do you consider it your best to date?
It is our best album to date yes, it opens doors for us, buys us flowers, and takes us to dinner.
Option Paralysis seems your most 'metal' album to date. Do you see yourselves as a metal band, a hardcore band, or...?
Ehhh it's starting to blur now, we've tried our hardest to not be able to be pigeonholed, and I finally think we're at that point where we can't really be labeled as one thing or another. It's a nice place to be. I feel that we'd be comfortable going in many different directions now without fear.
How has releasing this latest album on your own label been different to releases in the past? Can you foresee yourself continuing to do it this way?
Well we didn't do it entirely on our own, we had a lot of help from Seasons Of Mist. It was just less traditional than a normal record deal. As artists, all you want is freedom to do what you want, flexibility, and to know that you have good people behind you. We have that on this one, and we will continue to only operate that way, whether that means completely on our own or with help.
You write a lot of songs that seem to be about heartbreak in some form or another (Widower comes to mind). Are you perpetually heartbroken or is it just a consistent theme you can pull from?
I definitely think personal relationships are some of the deepest wells for creativity, however, most of our lyrics are introspective. Some of the relationships I am dealing with, are with myself. Looking inward. Sometimes the word “you” is referring to myself, or to another person, or to a feeling or situation. I, like most artistic people, have extreme highs and lows emotionally, and that's when you tend to write. I do recognize though, after three albums, that I tend to mine my relationships for artistic fodder, but it is not deliberate.
How does it feel to have the support of guys like Mike Patton, Trent Reznor, even Jens Kidman and other big names for your music?
It's a huge honor, it lets us know that we're doing something right.
Whose idea was it to first use clean vocals back in the day?
It kind of just happened. There was never really a conscious decision, you just try to stay open to what the song needs and where it should go, and not be afraid to go there.
You've gotten a reputation as musical polymaths, unafraid to admit liking pop, for example. Do you have a fixed set of influences? Is there any sort of music that you won't listen to?
I'll listen to anything if it moves me in some way. I don't care about style or genre. I'll go from Converge to Alicia Keys to M83 to Discordance Axis to Q-Tip without flinching, and then hop over to Phillip Glass and then over to Michael Jackson. No problem.
Greg, are you afraid that one day you are going to severely harm yourself during a liveset?
It happens pretty frequently. I've walked a thin line, and luckily never been seriously hurt or permanently damaged, but I think my definition of seriously hurt is different at this point than most people's.
What band, past or present, would you most like to open for and why?
We've played with so many great bands, and so many of our heroes. I don't know. I guess any of the greats that aren't around anymore, Hendrix, Morrison, the Beatles, shit like that, not because I care about playing with them, just because I'd like to be able to see them.
What are your current favourite five albums?
This is tough. New Crystal Castles, newest Maxwell album, newest Converge, this Aerosmith live bootleg album from the seventies, Pearl Jam Unplugged.
Are you political people, and does this affect the music in any way?
We have our individual views, we don't agree about everything, and some of us are passionate about different things ior issues n that field. Lyrically, it sometimes but rarely influences, and when it does it's indirectly. I don't choose to deliberately touch on political themes. If they creep in it's through the sunconscious like everything else.
What does the future hold for the 'Plan? Where do you expect to be in ten years' time?
Ten years time I hope to be alive but I expect to be a homeless person haha. I dunno, I could have never answered that question in 2001. I will say though that I think we've reached a point that we can do this as long as we like. We've reached a good creative stride in this band, things seem to be going really well on every level. Maybe it's time to pull the plug while things are good haha. We'll still be making music as individuals definitely, and hopefully still together as well, if it's still a fruitful relationship.
Do you have a favourite joke you could tell us?
Not one that you could print! My favorites are always the worst and most offensive.
Many thanks! Any final words?
Thanks to everyone for giving two shits about us and for being there, whether you're a new fan or a longtimer. See you on tour!
