For the metal they play Italians Barbarian could not have picked a better moniker or the label association. Hell Headbangers would love nothing to release something old school with attitude and Barbarian has it in droves.

The short eponymous 7” vinyl EP is a perfect glimpse into the band's psyche. Simulacra of the Ageless Need is crusty blackened heavy metal, speeding to the tune of Motörhead or old Grave Digger riffs, until it runs into an epic heroic solo. This is morning caffeinated music if there is one. Snarly, but controlled, vocals spit out words to prod on the headbanging.

Stench of God is slightly different, more in line with what little I heard from Barbarian before. It is stretchier, sludgier, less punky, yet more rotten and stenchy, just like the title describes, until last minute when another solo brings out inner Motörhead to vanquish inner Celtic Frost.

At the intersection of heavy/speed/thrash and black metal, Barbarian could care less about genre conforms, and play what they really want.
