Surprise of the month
Fast. Loud. Death. If you took out ”death” from that title and replaced it outright with ”thrash”, I could pretty much end this review there. But for the sake of proper critique, let us take at least a slightly deeper look. Lost Society was founded a scant three years ago by a buncha rowdy Finnish teens (numbering at four right now) who currently average out just below twenty years of age. After winning the 2012 Global Battle Of the Bands, the group signed up to Nuclear Blast that has now pushed out this blistering cauldron of a debut album out to the masses.

As I pointed out, three words could be enough to depict this record. Nuance and subtlety are not in high regard on this doozy. You don’t even need to go to the amusing song titles such as Thrash All Over You, Bitch, Out' My Way and Braindead Metalhead to figure that out (and ok, Piss Out My Ass is a bit too droll even for me). The first crunchy guitar blasts and drum slams of the opening track N.W.L. throw the ball out there and for 35 minutes and scraps, it does not stop rolling. A few seconds of slowed-down breakdowns may distract your daily intake of MOSH, but soon enough it’ll be right back to riffs, off-the-wall screams and gang shouts and more riffsriffsriffs. Many of them are good stuff and the intensity is certainly palpable. I realize that the idea of virtuoso metal musicians below the age of legal Stateside drinking is nothing new anymore, but at least to me instrumental chops such as these are seriously impressive for any age. Having seen the guys pull these face-stomping storms off live as well, you truly are left to wonder why you didn’t spend more months of your adolescence in your garage, beside that crackling Peavey amplifier.

What you get on Fast Loud Death is equal amounts of nodding to the classics of Kreator, S.O.D. and Anthrax while also getting the Municipal Waste-style modern crossover element of more recent days. It’s not technical in the sense of progishness such as that of Vektor, but technical in terms of really straight-forward yet impressive riffage. Don’t come in for hyper-intelligent social commentary or harmonic sophistication, I’ll say that much. A tad over half-n-hour of belligerent, unhinged, violent fun with a quality production job to boot. Not the best of its kind, nothing innovative, but plenty enjoyable and solid in every way. Lost Society is a bunch of younglings to watch in the near future.
