Surprise of the month

A typical Monday evening when I put this CD into my player with some doubts about the content due to the simple artwork. But it only proves that the artwork does not always reflect the true content of an album. Anyway the little intro starts : not bad, really nothing original or thrilling to this point, but before this thought can reach my mind the first songs starts ! Right away, a fantastic guitar melody enters my mind and believe me it will stays in there, along with it powerful guitars riffs for a great power metal moment. My first impressions are Hammerfall meets Helloween, then from track to track I can perceive some Nocturnal Rites and even Iced Earth influences as well. Far away from being a copycat of these bands Storyteller is a wonder of epic power metal, in the pure heroic fantasy tradition but with their own sound as well (that's not easy nowadays). For slow and mid-tempo songs, definitely some Blind guardian like atmospheres, but unfortunately these songs are not as interesting unlike BG, and this is the album weakness I might add (too many of these uninteresting slow songs). Power metal songs are excellent but ballads are not controlled by the band and should be avoided as much as possible. Singer reminds me of Hammerfall a lot and even Gary Moore on the last track (but the entire songs reminds me of Gary Moore, not only vocals). A good surprise and nicely done I might add, production is good but sound could be more powerful ! A very good album for all true / power metal fans.
