Oh yeah, I remember now that The Atlas Moth exist. I’d never heard the band before, but I remember seeing their album in the local record store a year ago or so. I picked it up, went “Huh, Atlas Moth… that’s a pretty cool band name!” I figured that it was probably some sort of doom, along the lines of Pelican or Isis. I later heard that I was right, mixing a sort of sludge metal with post rock amounts of reverb. That isn’t really my thing, but then again it isn’t really not my thing either.

I saw that they had released this EP and didn’t know what to expect. I turned on the album and started listening when my girlfriend told me to restart the song. I did. She asked me what song it was. I took a look and it was nothing more than a cover of California Dreaming. I took a look and noticed that all of the songs were covers, featuring songs by Pink Floyd, Failure, and The Doors. I am familiar with all but the band Failure, but I would only call Pink Floyd’s Fearless a favorite.

The other ones are good and interesting takes on songs that never come anyway near heavy in their original form. The Atlas Moth completely changes California Dreaming and Five to One, making them almost unrecognizable. This isn’t necessarily a bad thing, but as neither song really cream my twinkie anyways it makes little impression on me.

The Floyd cover on the other hand is a monster. An often forgot about track on the often forgot about album Meddle, the band makes it sound true to the original while still giving it new life and really hanging on the strength of the song’s main riff.

Is this enough to justify a purchase? Not for me. If anything, I would download the Floyd song on iTunes and just check out the rest on Youtube. But if you really are a fan of The Atlas Moth then this may be a good release to hold you off until their next full length. It is nice though for a change, to see a modern band embrace this period of time in music. Flower Power Metal? Gnarly.

By the way, look again at the cover and get a laugh.
