I haven’t been an Amon Amarth fan for a long time. Having been exposed to albums like With Odin On Our Side and Fates Of Norn and getting hooked, I decided to go ahead and review this album. I liked their last 2 albums so I wanted to get this album in hopes it will deliver the same viking metal onslaught that their last 2 albums did. Well it did and I believe it is much better than their last 2, because of the diversification that this album brings versus their last few albums. Johan Hegg’s vocals on this album ranges from low grunts to high pitched shrieks, giving the album a nice change of flow throughout. Even the drumming from Fredrik Andersson varies from blast beats to double bass drums, adding to that change of flow. It’s these diversifications that gives the whole album something different than your run of the mill death metal album. And the songs on Twilight Of The Thunder God have a nice mix of styles. Songs like Twilight Of The Thunder God, The Hero, and Guardians Of Asgaard (featuring Entombed vocalist Lars Göran Petrov) gives a nice bombastic, raise your hammer in the air feel, while songs like Where Is Your God and Varyags Of Milklagaard, gives you a nice dose of pure unadulterated, aggressive viking death metal. Live For The Kill might be the most unique song on the album. It’s somewhat a mid tempo song, but has a nice cello solo by the cello metal masters Apocalyptica adding the uniqueness of the album and the change of flow I mentioned earlier. Overall this might be the best Amon Amarth album yet. The band continues to add changes to their sound without so much sacrificing their viking death metal sound that made them the best in that niche. |
