Yeah what is "metal"?

Not this. Everybody agrees on this. Really, if you were going to pick a Pink Floyd album that was more "metal" (though none are), you would pick Animals or The Wall.

I have no problem if you want to stick to categories. I see it more broadly.

Your position makes absoloutely no sense. You're basically stating that there are no music genres; that music is just one giant thing. Thats fine, except it makes conversation and real life absoloutely impossible.

"You listen to metal?"

"Ya, the new Britney Spears album was great, butI think that Elton John is about as high as the genre got ."

"Not true! Bach, Albert King and Eminem are the best in metal, by far!"

Metal selection at ye local CD shoppery: Simple Plan, Avril Lavigne and the Starland Vocal Band.

So, you know, you can stick to your uber-"look how open minded I am, music is one organism, blah blah blah" thing, and I'll stick to my, you know, reality.

Wow Jeff, you reviewed a band that clearly does not play metal and no one has called for your head yet. In fact the harshest criticism has been a few people questioning whether or not an album so clearly not metal belonged on this site. God, everyone even acknowledged the greatness of this album. Three years ago the people on the old forums would have crucified you. Anyway, good review, and I definitely agree with it being on this site.

I got this today, seeing as I haven't listened to it in at least 8 years. My favourite song is still Any Colour You Like, though.

You obviously did not understand my earlier post. Metal exists of qualities. These qualities can transcend categories. I don't see it as black and white as you do. If you want to assign "metal" to something on the basis of "objective" qualities, you'll forget something. You see it too rational and music isnt completely rational. Opinions of "metal" are diverse and (also) constitute what is "metal". If you don't add this to your definition of "metal" you'll miss a dimension. You forget the sometimes irrational opinion of people. This all too casual to address actually...

I like this CD and realize its tremendous influence, but at the same time I never listen to it even though I own it. Ah well, I probably will eventually if I ever grow out of metal.

David Gilmour's leads are absolutely blistering here.
One of the best; he does more with a single bend / hammer / pull-off than many a shredder does with ten arpeggios.

I know what I like and Dark Side Of The Moon bores me. Actually, everything Pink Floyd produced after Ummagumma bores me...
