I've listened to it twice.. Didn't like it at all and I love all of Tristania's albums. I couldn't believe I was listening to Tristania.. Very sad that this album is so bad, I was very excited about it.. But then, thats just my opinion, I'd recommend listening to it and forming your own opinion instead of listening to me though or anyone else.

Widow's Weeds is the best Tristania album without a doubt.

Agreed! Beyond the veil is still a masterpiece though. When Veland left the band the decline from quality started.

I haven't been able to get into 'Ashes', It doesn't compare to their previous CDs in my mind.

Sirenia is now the better band. Their debut is a masterpiece!

Although I'm a huge power metal fan, I drift off the style to Gothic metal, especially for female fornted bands.
I really like the Nemesea 'Mana' debut for example (just finished the review for this actually), and I love Within Temptation 'The silent force'!

I'm a huge Tristania fan but I have to admit Ashes is a fucking joke. It is everything this band are not supposed to be; boring. Save yourself the trouble and get Widow's Weeds or Beyond the Veil instead. Man I am pissed off with this album!

What makes Tristania so good? Atmosphere, creativity, incredible song structure, violins, choirs.
What is Ashes lacking? All of the above.

I need to make a correction. Ashes has one fantasic song; Endogenisis. It is an absolute marvel that gives me goosebumps listening to it. It really is a pity about the rest though.

Anyone elses thoughts on this album?

Ashes has 2 at least fantastic songs: Equilibrium & Endogenisis. I don't think that it's so bad, although I haven't heard of their first albums. But some tracks are really boring.

Also, The Wretched and Libre are good songs... but could have been better.

My reaction to the new Tristania is the same reaction I had when I first heard How To Measure A Planet by The Gathering! I couldn't believe it was the same band! I was so disappointed, but I eventually let the album sit for a while and approached it again. The next time it was better, much better, fucking brilliant! Now, that was The Gathering, but Tristania haven't disappointed me 100% with this album. It is slightly weak, but it's a good album. It's just not to be compared with their previous work because it won't stand up.

Just like Load and Reload can't touch Metallica's early work, if you can listen to them with an open mind and not compare, listen as if it's a new band you're hearing, then they're damn good albums for the most part. The new Tristania is the same. Good until you start thinking about their older work. It's not an album that you can put in a disc changer with the rest of Tristania's CDs and hit shuffle.

Sirenia, like someone said, is by far the better band now.
