yeah i hate drums that sound like that to. i've thought of the exact same thing you said to.

Probably for lack of a real drummer. Those sound programmed. I have a kit that sounds exactly like that in FL Studio.

eh its the whole modern loudness war sound. Especially for that album the production sucked, combine that with the whole sterile overall sound expect the drums to sound like that.

I agree on the drummers - I suspect it has something to do with either computer programming or most likely triggered drums whereby the real drum sound is converted into a preprogrammed one.

It's one reason my favourite metal comes from pre-1995 when drums were real and most things were recorded on analogue systems.

Kinda like everything in the 21st century - an obsession with sterile and completely over engineered things.

EDIT: Triggers are especially used when drumming is fast. At those speeds it's difficult to hit the skins with any strength/velocity thereby resulting in a quiet drum sound and resulting in fluctuating volume levels.

Triggers convert the sound into a steady sound

That Satan's Host band is excellent for modern power metal. At times it's more like Thrash/Death with power metal vox.

I'm studying to be an Audio Engineer and over the past couple of years I've come to hate really processed sounding drums that sound like they've been covered in effects and eq'ed heavily.

Obviously some albums, like Dimmu Borgir's Abrahadabra where the drums have been processed and Eq'ed sound great. But a lot of modern productions sound annoying to me now which is one of the reasons I've gravitated towards black metal in the past couple of years. In majority of black metal everything still sounds natural. Bands like Behexen of course will write killer riffs, maintain a sane production but still retain a raw quality and evil atmosphere. However great bands like the aforementioned Dimmu Borgir who have had really big productions also get great tones.

However a lot of American Deathcore sounds like shit to me with there giant bass drops and over processed drums. I just don't enjoy that sound and it doesn't sound real. It's frankly a tiring sound for me and I hope in the future metal goes back to a more natural sound.

I like how the drums sound on that track as well as it definitely gives it more of an analogue sound to the recording. The worst drum tones I can immediately think of are the drum recordings on Cradle of Filth's 'Cruelty and the Beast' and Metallica's '...And Justice For All'. That Satan's Host album is good btw.

I'm not fond of the modern style of production and often it's the drum sound that bothers me most. I don't really care if triggers are used, but I will never like the sound of clicky or plastic sounding drums.
