There are times when I am reminded of the amazing power of metal and last night was one of those times. I saw the Edguy/Tad Morose show at BB Kings in New York City. This was on the heels of a killer anatomy test that I had been studying for. Hell, all I have been doing is studying. Since the last Nightwish show here, I've gone out one night in a month which for me and for any New Yorker is RARE. So I hauled ass to the city and got to the club. I'm waiting in line to by an Edguy shirt and Jens Johansson walks in to cheers from the people in line. This is so fucking cool. Each time there is a show mildly related to power metal or scandinavian bands, Jens just shows up. We got down to the stage in time for Tad morose. I was vaguely familiar with them but they just came out and kicked ass. Krunt had problems with his amp head and didn't have sound for the first song. After they replaced it, the show took off. It fucking rocked to see these guys and I know I certainly need to get more of their music after the show they put on. they're like a more power metal version of Iced Earth to me. I got Anders (bass) and Daniel (guitar) to sign my ticket. They were great guys and were stoked about finally playing in the States again. I talked to Peter (drums) briefly and he was a great guy too.

So then Edguy comes out and they fucking RULE. They open with Lavatory Love Machine and didn't relent for the next 2 hours!!! They played all the kickass tracks from Hellfire Club except Mysteria for some reason. The extended live versions of The Piper Never Dies and We Don't Need a Hero were incredible. I have seen few bands who can match them in their stage presence and energy. Tobias is running all over the place and doing the splits and high kicks that David Lee Roth made famous in the 80's. He's a spry little guy running around there. They do the synchronized headbang and triple guitar swing perfectly. As a live act, they are incredibly tight and just had the crowd and myself eating out of their hand. Tobi also has great between song crowd announcements. At the end of the show he told us that Edguy is going to be seriously working on getting a full scale US tour going ASAP. So for like half the show, Jens is standing next to me and my friends, taking pictures of himself and the stage. We get his autograph before he runs off backstage. In addition to Jens, Jack "SUPER ASSHOLE" Frost and Russell Allen (I wouldn't bet money of this one but I'm pretty sure it was him) were also running around the club.

It was one of those times that I was just proud to be a metalhead. It just gives you the geeling that THIS is what we work so hard for. Metal will never die as long as there are awesome bands like Edguy out there.

Great mini-review!
Yeah, Edguy kicks ass live. I saw them a few months back here in Sweden and they put on a great show! They didn't play Mysteria here either, which is kinda hard to understand since it is probably one of the top three Edguy songs imo. Do you have the full setlist Jay? They did not play We dont need a hero when they were here.
But the highlight was Vain glory opera, man that song is so fucking killer live! The whole crowd started to jump and everyone was totally exhausted after that one.
In addition to Tad morose (which was okay, I guess), we had our local band Nocturnal Rites as special guests. If you never seen them live, you really should. They were even better than Edguy live, and I personally like Edguy more!

Anyway, I kinda rambled.. Edguy are a great bunch of guys that seem to truly have fun on stage. If you havent seen them in action yet, go see, even if they're not your cup of tea they should not be overlooked if they pass through your town. Great fun!

I don't remember it in order but it was:

Lavatory Love Machine
King of Fools
Navigator
We Don't Need a Hero
The Piper Never Dies
Under the Moon
Vain Glory Opera
Wake Up the King
Headless Game
Fallen angels
Land of the Miracle

Encore:
Tears of a Mandrake
Avantasia
Out of Control

If I left anything out I'm sorry but this show as fucking insane and I just was headbanging so hard, I might have damaged some neurons.

I was drinking coffee when I saw the Lavatory Love Machine video from Nuclear Blast's site. Halfway through the song I snorted coffee out of my nose, which seemed like a good idea at the moment. Jay, I assume Toby performed similar sorts of lewd gestures during LLM?

Geez, I just can't forget the entire band doing the disco dance thing... hum. Better shell out the money for the single with the video.

I was there too, compaired to the Nightwish show this one was at most 2/3rds full. Tad Morose was awesome, I love that band, they were much better than I thought they would be live although I was a bit disappointed they didn't do my favorite song: "Another Way". They were the major reason I went to this show, since I am not a big Edguy fan. Edguy were pretty good but I just don't get their style and their sound, of course some songs by them I like, but most are like "bleh" to me. Another thing that pissed me off is that they did not turn off the regular lights when Edguy came on, it was like I could see fans better than the band it was just retarded. Then I just got dizzy and sleepy partly from being tired and partly from being bored by Edguy. I really don't get why Edguy are so highly regarded, I think Tad Morose sound much more interesting with much better vocals and more variation in songs, sound and vocals. I guess Edguy just don't do it for me, I got 3 of their albums and none of them really impressed me, even the 2 Avantasias. But, man, Tad Morose were awesome.

I think their setlist was (not in order):

Sword of Retribution
Matters of the Dark
Etherial Soul
Another Time Around
Corporate Masters
Servant of the Bones
Anubis
No Mercy
Cyberdome
Take on the World

EdGuy is coming to Mexico and honestly it ain't my type of band but they seem to be a great band live so I'll go see them.

I like Avantasia and own the second part but I don't own anything by EdGuy so I think I'll buy someting to be prepared for the show; what would you recommend?

Vain Glory Opera or Hellfire Club. Those are their two best IMO.

Yeah, you can't go wrong with Hellfire Club or Vain Glory Opera, as both albums are excellent. If you're lucky they'll play some Avantasia as well.

Really? They really DO play Avantasia in the EdGuy concerts?

Yeah sometimes. Only one or two songs though. They included two songs on their live album, Inside and Avantasia, and when I saw them live they played Chalice of Agony.

Well, I saw them in Montreal the day after you...hehe...It was the first time I was seeing Edguy "live" and for sure, I'll never forget that night !!!!! This band really kicks asses and they're explosive on stage !!!! I'll see them live again this week, so...I'll give more news about that show later, if you want to hear about it !

The "Vain Glory Opera" and "Hellfire Club" are excellent albums, yes !!!!!!! Now, (if you didn't already purchased those 2 albums...and want to have more stuff for the next concert), I would suggest you "Theater of Salvation" and "Mandrake" !!!!! Great ones too !!!!! These are my 4 favourite Edguy's albums...but I still think that "Vain Glory Opera" is the best best best...depends tastes, I guess...

My budddy is going to see Edguy in Minnesota latter this month. I would go with him, but I'm going to see Stratovarius in Chicago in Sept. I can't afford another trip.

I would have loved to see that show.

I saw EdGuy play live a few days before the christmas just past. It was absolutely awesome.

A guy from the croud threw up a sorta santa hat and tobi put it up and made us all sing a jingle bells song.

The set-list was mostly from the Hellfire Club album, however there were a few songs from Avantasia, the Savage Poetry and Vain Glory Opera in the mix too, was a jaw dropping event.

Even if your not a big EdGuy fan from their studio material, the stage presence and the general energy from the show should make anyone enjoy the evening.

@ metalNESS:

I'll see Stratovarius in September too (they'll play about 30 minutes from my house) and I just can't wait for that event anymore, since I've never seen them "live" before !!!!!

Edguy might be the best live band I've ever seen. While I like a lot of their songs, most of their albums are quite uneven imo. But they rule live! By the way I'm going to see Nightwish and Nocturnal Rites on September 8th and I can't wait!!

I'd love to see them live, especially with the crunchy sound of their new album.
